Bike through the wide valley and past 14,000-year-old glacier-carved gorges via Kaprun to Zell am See. The option to go paragliding (not included in the trip price and weather dependent) beckons the truly adventurous! After returning to the hotel, opt to take a short spin along the lake, or choose to walk or enjoy a scenic boat ride on the “Zeller See”. After rafting, we’ll have lunch and then set off by bike past Bischofshofen, famous for its Four Hills Ski-Jumping event. Hotel Obauer, Werfen (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Kayaking: 1.5 hours, easy

  • Day 5

Tour the Hohenwefen castle, cycle along the Salzach River

After a tour of the Hohenwefen castle and a possible falconry exhibition, ride along the Salzach River, past flower-decked houses, and the Gollinger Waterfall. Meander along the tree-lined trails, eventually arriving in Salzburg. A night on your own will allow you to relax and unwind or stroll the magical streets of Salzburg.

Optional bus tours to surrounding areas carry you to the lake district, Bavarian Mountains, Eagle’s Nest, or the stunning hills of The Sound of Music. "I participated in your August 20-27th, 2023 Austrian Adventure trip with my friend John F. In summary, it was a spectacular trip and your fine guides, Ben, Ronny and Peter were a large part in ensuring all us customers had a great time. Besides the strikingly beautiful Austrian countryside, I especially enjoyed the multi-sport element of this trip. I believe this feature sets you apart from some of your competitors, such as backroads and I would encourage you folks to offer more of these type trips. We were never bored with: Biking, Kayaking, Skydiving, White water rafting and hiking activities as well as time for sightseeing. The trip through the Hallstatt salt mine and walking around Salzburg were some other highlights. There was also some free time included in the schedule which was also nice.

We had a smaller group of 7 guests, with 2 active guides with what I thought to be great chemistry. (Luck of the draw). But the guides helped ensure we all jelled. The hotels and meals were very good and appropriate for this type of action trip.

This was my second Active Adventure trip and my 4th adventure travel-type trip and I would not hesitate to recommend you folks, or go on another trip with you. read less

"This was my second trip with Active Adventures and it did not disappoint! Had a great trip with our guides Peter, Tom and Marjam. All were well travelled guides with interesting life stories and they took great care of everyone. Everything was well organized, and hotels and restaurants were great. We travelled with a Vegetarian and there was no issue with finding vegetarian meals. Trip is rated as moderate. Our trip mates were all fit and even had two that did extra miles and hill climbs on the bike. Not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I weren't fit but there is van support the whole way incase someone is having an off day. One item of note for the biking.....the printed directions were very hard to follow while riding. Had to stay as a group with Marjam leading or I would not have made all the correct turns. A suggestion would be having an App or map to follow on a cell phone (We heard there is one in development)!
During our activities, we were greeted by Tom serving delicious fruit and snacks on a silver platter. He was always a welcome site! Beautiful scenery and friendly people the whole trip. My 2 friends and I stayed extra nights in Salzburg and flew back from there which takes you into Frankfurt for connections back to the states. There is a huge distance between terminals in Frankfurt and long lines at customs. Almost missed connecting flights and not all luggage made it home with us. Would not schedule it that way again. Would definitely recommend going back to Munich for return flights. Although we were able to see Mozart Museum, attend a concert, hike in the park and shop during our extra time in Salzberg, there is enough free time to hit the highlights with the group.

"Great combination of seeing local sites and the "just right" levels of activity. Loved the guided biking between Austrian hotels and the variety of activities. Each one of our guides made sure we were well prepared even through the optional activities. In the unexpected heat spell they provided everyone with sun screen and plenty of water. And what a treat to find rest stops with one of guides holding a try of fresh fruit through all of our activities. It's things like this which made it an above and beyond trip. The guests were also great; we made lots of new friends on this excursion.

This is my second tour and would highly recommend this trip and these guides. read less

"There was not much not to love about this trip. Phenomenal guides, great guests, and perfect location. Enough activity for even the hardiest of our group with the option to go at your own pace. Lots of surprises such as trays of fresh fruit at rest stops, the guides accompanying us on optional activities, and helping with translations when needed.
The agenda was perfect.

Highly recommend this trip. read less

"Our trip with Peter and Ronnie was great from the very start. The ease of the trip details were seamless. Our only effort was in the true adventure of the trip. Hiking, biking, and kayaking. I was amazed at the genuine attention they gave us. Nothing was ever brushed aside, whether it was the right kind of band aid or advice on technical maneuvering on the bike. We were lucky that our group all got along wonderfully and this spirit carried us through the
entire adventure. The accommodations, the meals, the Michelin Star breakfast ( twice) were all first class. Also, when there was a glitch they worked through it with such grace and professionalism. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone that wants to experience Austria in a unique and healthy way. read less

"I have nothing but great things to say about my hiking, biking, rafting, and kayaking adventures in Austria under the superb leadership of my guides, Peter and Ronnie. These gentlemen are true professionals: it was clear throughout the trip that their only concerns rested in the enjoyment and safety of their clients. Their attention to detail and genuine concern for us was unsurpassed. When I had problems handling my e-bike, Peter made a special trip, after a long day, to Salzburg to get me a new bike. Meanwhile, Ronnie went out of his way to take me to a pharmacy to obtain bandages and antiseptic. I was, and remain, extremely impressed by their concern and kindness. I would definitely seek them out in future trips, and I definitely recommend them to anyone seeking pleasurable and fulfilling adventures. Thanks, Peter. Thanks, Ronnie. You made this trip so special for me, for my wife, and for all the others in our group! read less

"Our family took this vacation to experience the Alps and be outdoors as much as possible. Active Adventures and our two tour guides delivered just that. Peter and Ronnie were spectacular tour guides and entertaining, attentive hosts. They tailored activities to meet each of our needs, with more challenges for those that wanted it. We cycled over 60 miles between villages, hiked up and down a mountain, rafted the Salzach river, and kayaked in the beautiful Hallstatt lake. We can't even choose what our favorite highlight was, as we all agree there are too many. I can't recommend this tour or these two guides enough—you won't forget this amazing experience. read less

"What an unbelievable trip! We were recommended to book this trip by some friends and we couldn't be more pleased that we did. We loved everything about this trip. The activity level was excellent, the accommodations were top notch and the meals were more than we expected.

The added bonus to all this were our guides, Peter and Ronnie. They worked to accommodate any special request and adapted the trip based on the needs of the group (it was super hot one day so instead of a bike ride we spent the day at a lake). They assisted everyone who needed or wanted versatility in the planned itinerary. Always making other choices available. The activities were incredible, with so much diversity. We loved them all. The hotel choices were perfect. We can't wait to go back to some of them one day soon. The food. What can I say! It was definitely 5*. One amazing meal after another. Useful Info

Where does the trip start?

On the first morning of the trip we'll pick you up at the Hotel Excelsior at 8:30am. You are welcome to book your pre-trip stay at this hotel directly or any other hotel in Munich, though you must make your own way to this pick-up point at the pre-designated time.

Where does the trip end?

Your trip ends with a drop-off at one of the following locations: Downtown Salzburg after breakfast, Munich International Airport for flights listed below, or a hotel of your choice in Downtown Munich around 1pm. Alternatively, depending on your travel plans, we can also drop you at the Salzburg train station.

What flights would you recommend?

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Munich at least the day before your trip starts. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the host city prior to your trip start.

Departure: Flying out on the last day of the trip, we recommend departing from Munich after 2pm. Earlier flight times will require a separate transfer booked at your own expense.

How much luggage can I bring on this trip?

You are allowed one piece of luggage on your trip, plus a daypack. Your main piece of luggage should not exceed 50 pounds (23 kilograms) and can be anything from a duffle bag to a sports bag with wheels or a suitcase. You’ll also want a good quality backpack sized 25-30 liters (2000 cubic inches) to use throughout the days.

You may also like to bring along a small camelbak to carry your water in and a layer of clothing for when you’re on the bike trail.

What is not included?

Flights to and from trip start/end points
Pre/Post accommodation
Optional extra activities
Travel insurance
Gratuities for your guides
Rental gear

Is tipping expected in Europe?

Tipping is not expected in Europe however you might want to tip a little extra if you feel someone gave really fantastic service, but it's not really necessary. Many of our people also choose to tip their Active Adventures Europe trip leaders and local guides and we recommend USD$20 per day, per guest, per Trip Leader/guide.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travelers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travelers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travelers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.
