    Hike Canyonlands National Park

    #1461

Once we’ve all met in Grand Junction, we’ll begin our journey with a drive to our first national park of this trip – Canyonlands! Canyonlands National Park is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River, a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes. We’ll explore Utah’s largest national park with a few short hikes, eyeing the skyward-jutting spires and needles, deep craters, and blue-hued mesas that dot the landscape. The Grant View Point trail is a popular choice a great chance to see some wildlife. After we’ve exhausted ourselves we’ll head to our accommodation for the night and our base camp for exploration of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

Canyonlands Inn or Greenwell Inn (Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 3-4 miles (5-6 kilometers)

  • Day 2

    Hike Moab

    #1462

After a hearty breakfast we’ll depart from Moab to a trail that is a maze of soaring fins, pinnacles, minarets, gargoyles, spires, and strangely shaped rock formations. Behold views of Fisher Towers, which are world-renowned for their exciting rock-climbing routes and a favorite subject of photographers for years. After this beautiful hike, settle in for lunch along the river. In the afternoon, beat the peak of the heat with a bit of downtime to enjoy some downtime to relax by the pool, explore downtown Moab, or grab a drink at a local brewery. Meet back up for dinner with your fellow travelers at one of our favorite restaurants in town.

Canyonlands Inn or Greenwell Inn (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 3 miles (5 kilometers)

  • Day 3

    Hike Arches National Park

    #1463

It’s an early start to the morning today to beat the crowds and the heat at Arches National Park. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks. We’ll hike to Delicate Arch, a 52-foot-tall (16 m) freestanding natural arch. The trail is a steady uphill climb through dry desert terrain, occasionally passing stunted trees or rock piles providing welcome shade. We’ll head back the same way and continue on to Devil’s Garden to explore more of the park by foot. Encounter the famous Landscape Arch, along with a few of our guides’ favorite arches in the area. After lunch, we’ll drive to Capitol Reef National Park, where we’ll spend the night at the Capitol Reef Resort, located on the doorstep of the park, and enjoy dinner in a quaint nearby town.

Capitol Reef Resort (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 5 miles (8 kilometers)

  • Day 4

    Hike Capitol Reef National Park

    #1464

Capitol Reef National Park surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. We'll head out to hike the Cassidy Arch trail after breakfast; Named after the famous Butch Cassidy, Cassidy Arch is located in the central portion of Capitol Reef National Park, and although the climb is steep, it's worth the visit as the arch is large and spectacularly photogenic at almost any angle! After lunch we’ll have time to explore more of the Capitol Reef National Park or relax at the Capitol Reef Resort, the choice is yours! We'll enjoy indulgent room accommodations alongside stunning views of the red rock cliffs, it's a unique and comfortable destination, along with fine amenities, to recharge for our day tomorrow!

Capitol Reef Resort (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 3-5 miles (5-8 kilometers)

  • Day 5

Hike Capitol Reef National Park & explore Anasazi State Park

    #1465

This morning we’ll head out for another hike through the beautiful Cohab Canyon. Native Americans once called this colorful landscape of tilted buttes, jumbled rocks and sedimentary canyons the Land of the Sleeping Rainbow. The banded orange and yellow walls do in fact resemble pastel-striped eggs and the holes and pockets texture the surface create a sandstone honeycomb fortified in rock. After lunch we’ll drive through to Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, known for its crimson-colored hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. On our way we’ll stop off at Anasazi State Park, where the ruins of an ancient Native American village are sheltered.

Bryce Canyon Grand (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 2 miles (3.2 kilometers)

  • Day 6

    Hike Bryce Canyon National Park

    #1466

After a hearty breakfast we’ll embark on a hike through the magical hoodoo rock formations of Bryce’s Queens Garden trail. The trail drops down into the canyon and we’ll wander through natural sculpted rock gardens of brilliantly colored spires, cliffs, and natural amphitheaters with the trail looping up with the Peek-a-boo trail, creating a figure-8, passing by the Wall of Windows, the Hindu temples finishing with a walk up the famous Wall Street with its switchbacks that leads back to the rim. After a full of day of hiking enjoy a bit of rest before dinner at the hotel.

Bryce Canyon Grand (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Hiking: Up to 8 miles (13 kilometers)

  • Day 7

Hike Bryce Canyon National Park & Zion National Park

    #1467

We’ll start the day with a hike offering unforgettable views of hoodoo scenery along the Bird’s Eye Trail, this is a short trail that leads past beautiful and unusual rock formations, providing close-up views. After our morning hike, we’ll drive to Zion National Park, winding through the magnificent canyon walls and towering cliffs that make up this majestic park. We’ll then head out on a hike in Zion National Park which showcases dramatic panoramas of towering canyon walls, picturesque views of the Virgin River, and lushly-vegetated trails. Later we’ll check into our accommodation for the next two nights, Springhill Suites, located only one mile from the park's entrance. The evening is then yours to explore and enjoy on your own.

    Springhill Suites (Breakfast, Lunch)

    Hiking: 5 miles (8 kilometers)

  • Day 8

    Canyoning Slot Canyon Adventure

    #1468

This morning, challenge yourself on a thrilling canyoning Slot Canyon adventure where you can truly experience the land around you. Rappel down water-carved rocks in a sandstone slot canyon with professionals who will guide you every step of the way. You'll be fully equipped and supported as you jump into this adrenaline-inducing activity, perfect for beginners. Springhill Suites (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Canyoning: 2 hours

  • Day 9

This is the end of your trip and we’ll leave you refreshed and invigorated from the good food, exercise, rest, and great times you’ll have had with us!

"Overall, things were well-planned and organized by the guides, which lead to a successful trip. I oved hiking in the beautiful National Parks of southern Utah and that meals, lodging and travel were all taken care of for me.
However, my enjoyment of this trip was undermined by the presence of one guest. He was much older than everyone else, at 78 years old. He had a level of fitness in his legs, but was stooped over and waddled from side to side when he walked, which effected his gait and balance. Most important he was not a hiker, ill-prepared for the trip and wore gym shoes. Proper hiking shoes are essential and this became a huge safety issue starting on day 2 when hiking in Fisher Towers. The trails are very narrow, rocky with cliffs on one side. It was a miracle that he did not fall, between his unsteady gait and slippery bottomed shoes. From that point on, one the guides needed to be near him on hiking trips. We offered him a hiking pole, which he often dragged on the ground.
This should be addressed by Active/Austin Adventures. A guest who is not suitable for an active outdoor hiking trip, on trails that were moderate-strenuous at times with narrow passages and cliffs, and who is not wearing appropriate hiking shoes is very unsafe. Moreover, traveling with an ill-prepared guest read less

What should I bring with me on the first day?

When you speak with your guides the night before your trip, they will give you a detailed description of what to bring with you on Day 1. Typically, this includes a day pack with your rain jacket, sunglasses, hat, camera, etc. Anything you want easy access to during the day should go in your day pack as the rest of your luggage will go in the locked cargo trailer pulled behind the van. Your guides will provide you with a water bottle on the first morning of your trip and will always have water available for refills. There will be snacks available at all times in the van. Your guides will also have bug spray and sunscreen accessible for you to use.

Will I have contact with my guides before the trip starts?

Your guides will call your cell phone the night before your trip begins to touch base on the first day’s plan. If they don’t get through to you, they will leave a voicemail on your cell phone with all the details you need to plan for your first morning.

You will have 2-3 guides on your Austin Adventure (depending on group size). We recommend USD$20 per day, per guest, per guide. Typically, gratuities are offered by check or cash in local currency on the final morning of the trip and can either be given to each guide individually or to one guide to be equally distributed. Most of our guides these days also accept gratuities via Venmo (please note this app does not work in Canada). All dining, housekeeping and activity tips are included in your trip price.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travelers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travelers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travelers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.
