Meet Yellowstone Guide: Melissa
Melissa’s love of adventure started young, with annual trips from her grandparents that opened her eyes to just how much of the world there is to explore. Since then, curiosity has taken her backpacking through 15 European countries, sleeping under the stars in the Swiss Alps, and chasing every chance to hike, bike, kayak, paddleboard, or get out on the water.
Yellowstone holds a special place in her heart for its wildlife, mountains, geysers, rivers, and endless opportunities to learn. As a guide, Melissa loves bringing that same sense of discovery to others—sharing what she knows, creating meaningful connections, and helping guests experience those unforgettable moments that make time in nature so special.
And if you’re lucky, she might even show you how to waterski backwards… while holding the rope with her foot.
What's your favorite travel destination?
Switzerland — nothing beats falling asleep under the stars in the Swiss Alps.
What's your favorite adventure activity?
Hiking, biking, waterskiing, paddle boarding, kayaking, really anything on the water!
What has been your most inspiring adventure experience?
Having never been to Europe, I let curiosity lead the way. I booked a flight, packed a backpack, and set off on what became one of the most inspiring 10 weeks of my life. Bouncing from one hostel to the next, I connected with locals and fellow solo travelers from around the world, asking questions, swapping stories, and following their recommendations on where to go next. That spirit of spontaneity carried me on an unforgettable journey through 15 different countries.
When did you first get the travel bug?
Starting when I was 5 years old, my grandparents would take us on a trip every year as our Christmas present. As world travelers themselves, my grandparents taught us all the ins and outs for how to properly travel, which sparked my curiosity and opened my eyes to the endless possible places to explore!
What destination would you most like to travel to (that you haven't been to yet)?
Next up on my bucket list is South East Asia!
Do you have any favorite hobbies or special talents you could tell us about?
I can waterski backwards, while holding the rope with my foot
What is your favorite trip to lead?
Yellowstone Adventure and Yellowstone Family Vacation! Not only is it the world’s first national park, but it has everything I love in one place: mountains, wildlife, geysers, rivers, big open valleys, dramatic canyons, and the feeling that something incredible could be around every corner. I also love how much there is to learn there. Yellowstone is one of those places where the more you understand it, the more magical it becomes.
What inspired you to become a trip leader?
Nothing beats getting to be out in nature, sharing my passion and knowledge, and creating meaningful connections and memorable experiences with others!
